One cannot deny the Under 15 XV the glory they deserve after such a tremendous season. A light but very mobile pack always had Southwood, Flatters, Dickinson and Hammond to the fore; they were particularly effective in loose play, and like last year's Colts, they dominated rucks and mauls from September to December. Securing good ball is all that matters to any pack of forwards, and how encouraging it is to note this singleness of purpose in so many College eights. Wigney is essentially a relayer of the ball, and how neatly he did this to fly-half Rutherford, the player around whom this team really operated. With his certain handling and a quick eye for a break, Alan is rapidly learning the art of playing in the pivotal position, and he is mature enough to realise that there is still plenty to do to improve his game, especially in the tactical kicking department. If the forwards won the ball and the halves set things up, then Wadlow, Nickerson and Herbert were deadly finishers. I have always been impressed by the determination and courage of Trevor Wadlow; whether in attack or defence he is a most uncompromising player and an inspiration to those around him. Cavell is a sound attacking fullback who even at this stage has all the makings of a polished first teamer. Senior rugby is going to receive a real boost when this group report for duty next September. By the way, Mr. Barwell has now had successive seasons with 100 records. It would appear we have a pipe-smoking Carwyn James in our midst!
Northgate 39-0 King's Ely 39-0 Colchester 56-0 Cambridge H.S. 102-0 Norwich 20-4 Wymondham Sec. 62-0 St. Josephs 40-0 Cambridge G.S. 32-0 Langley 83-3 Greshams 32-6 Woolverstone 48-0 Aggregate 578-13 Note: This was the last season when the score for a try was still only 3 points! This made such high scores much harder to achieve than later seasons when this went up to four points. One additional game was arranged at the end of the season which was not reported in the magazine. This was against a Norwich team but not sure exactly which school. This game was also won in a similar style and the 50 point average score for the season was still exceeded easily.
