The inaugural Old Wymondhamians NE reunion

31st October 2009

Held at the Headlam Hall Hotel, County Durham

18 people attended our first regional reunion. Our host was old boy David Jackson, a director of the hotel . For reasons which will become apparent this will be remembered as our first “gourmet reunion”.

The attendees were (in no particular order):

David Jackson

Melvyn Roffe

Mike Herring

Jane Herring

Phillip Wade

Kath Wade

Alan Bridges

Eileen Wyatt

Graham Smith

Suzanne Milligan

Pat Howard

Miles Howard

David Cross

Alan Wright

Beverley Wright

Adam Wright

Adrian Ostler

Dorothy Ostler

The hotel itself is magnificent with excellent rooms (or suites of rooms) which David organised for us at very attractive rates. Its facilities include a 9 hole golf course, tennis court, snooker, spa etc.

Some people attended just for the night whilst others made a long weekend of it. There are many attractions in the area but most people visited the Bowes museum in Castle Barnard at some point in there stay.

The morning of the reunion coincided with the first day of the hunting season and whether you are a fan of hunting or not the sight of the assembled horses riders and hounds outside the hotel enjoying their hot toddy before setting off into the countryside was an enjoyable spectacle.

The highlight of the weekend was the Saturday night reunion dinner with eight courses which had been  specially selected by David together with a range of wines to suit each course. The menu is attached and the wines were:

Proscecco Di Valdobbjadene 2007

Pouilly Fume Les Chailloux 2007

Macon Uchizy Domaine Talmard 2007

Fluerie La Madone 2007

Rutherglen Muscat Graham Vintage Port 1997

I do not recall a better meal (the lamb still being discussed the next morning), with excellent company.  Many tales of previous escapades in the College circulated, although none seemed to faze Melvyn!  After the port the College song was “sung”. Memo to self – take words next reunion!

A remarkable and memorable evening which I am sure will be remembered as our “Gourmet Reunion”.

There were some thoughts that we should, in future, “theme” our reunions so that they appeal to particular taste as well as being in various regions. We already have Bob Rowell's golf weekend which goes from strength to strength, but what about theatre, other sports, or whatever? Any comments would be very welcome.
