Waiting at the old long jump pit - 1955

A group of juniors waiting at the end of the long jump track, by the original gymnasium, for their turn to jump. The only identifiable people are Richard (Dick) Elsey on the left and Adrian 'Twinks' Smith fourth from the left. More names anyone?

Up until the early 1970's when soccer was reintroduced, athletics was the main sport of the second half of the Spring term. If the weather was not good enough then cross-country runs were a suitable substitute. This timing is apparent from the amount of clothing that everyone is wearing so it was obviously not that warm. Also there are no leaves on the distant trees so it was still early in the year. Track suits were too expensive for most at this time hence the odd mixture of trousers and sweaters instead.
