August Update

Sad News - Jenny Perryman

The Obituary section of the local King’s Lynn free newspaper contained the sad news of the passing of Jenny Perryman on 23rd July 2024. She was just 64. She passed away at Norfolk Hospice Tapping House.

Jenny was at Wycol for just the sixth form in the mid 1970’s and she appears in the 1st XI hockey teams from that era on WCRemembered. I believe that she was in Fry Hall.

I didn’t know Jenny all that well but we would often bump into each other various events. I think I first came across her when she was a sales agent for a fixings company when I was involved in the construction of Lynnsport in the early 1990’s. We would often overlap at blood donation sessions in KL as well as at my infrequent visits to The London Porterhouse [a well-known local hostelry]. I last saw her at the OW 100 club draw at The Blue Bell in Stoke Ferry in October 2022.

I know that there will be many who remember Jenny and will be saddened by her passing. Phil R.

Sad News - Richard Watton

We have had a message from Caroline Harrison, who is in contact with Kris Watton (Richard's wife) to advise the following.

I think some of you already know that Richard has been really ill recently and passed away yesterday early morning (18th June).  There will be a small service at our local church and any of his friends from school would be very welcome to come, there is a big hotel near to the church in our village if anyone would like to stay, please let us know.  The date is 16th July at 2 pm.

Richard was in York from 1965-72, following which he had a long career in the RAF. On retirement, he went to work for Panavia in Germany and settled near Munich. He did attend a couple of small get togethers in North Norfolk a few years ago, and then sadly his health deteriorated.

If anyone wants to send a card or get in touch with Kris, contact details can be provided. Email julie@wcremembered.co.uk.

June Update

Some of our Alumni may be interested in military matters and a book has recently been co-authored by John Head and covers the massacre at Le Paradis in May 1940 during the evacuation at Dunkirk and is titled “Hell in Paradise”.

This article recently appeared in the Eastern Daily Press:-

https://www.edp24.co.uk/news/24296261.new-book-tells-story-massace-norfolk-soldiers/

John was at Wymondham College from 1964-1969 [Salisbury] and studied English, History and Geography at A Level.

John has said that his enthusiasm for history literature and writing was inspired by the Wycol teachers.

Miss Bowles was one of these teachers and he hopes that she would have been proud of him for producing this book, as it was through her that he established his love for literature, especially the war poets.

If you would like a signed copy of the book, please contact John at johnhead1@btinternet.com

OW College Tour & BBQ 2024 - Reunion Update

A message from Geoff Lewis

I have finally got a price for the catering from the College so we can now move forward and start collecting payments. The cost this year is £20/head for the barbeque. Sadly the College have decreed that we can neither sell nor consume alcohol on the premises this year (shades of our schooldays then!) but soft drinks will be available.

The 100 Club draw will be held at the Kings Head in Bawburgh on Wednesday 17th July at 7.30pm which will give people the opportunity to catch up over a drink.

We will then meet at the College on Thursday 18th July at 11am for a College tour courtesy of John Mewse followed by the barbeque on Kett Lawn.

All OW's plus partners are welcome. Over the past couple of years we have had participants from a broad spectrum of years and be assured that whatever era you were at the College you will be made most welcome.

For payment details please initially contact me via email at wycol1965@gmail.com. Please note the bank account details are different to those for previous events. This is due to shortened timescales and we have had to streamline the payment process. So please do not make a payment using previously suuplied details!

We look forward to seeing you in July.

Geoff Lewis (1965-72)

Sadly the start of the New Year doesn’t bring any better news…….

We have just received this from Kevin Ireland:-

It’s with great sadness that I write to report the death of my brother, Malcolm Ireland, on the last day of December 2023.

As those who knew him would testify, Malcolm was something of a force of nature. He attended Wymondham College from 1964-72. He was never much of an academic but had the distinction of playing rugby for the First 15 for four years, as well as gaining an England cap in his final year. The 1972 school annual report records:

“Ireland was, of course, an inspiration throughout; his skill, speed and aggression about the field were uncompromising and like all good captains he led his team from the front. His eventual award of an England Under 19s cap against Scotland was fully deserved…”.

Malcolm spent the majority of his working life in IT for a bank. After leaving Wymondham College he played rugby for Norwich, amongst other teams, and devoted considerable time to coaching. For many years after moving to London he volunteered as a scout master and enjoyed leading camping trips back to Norfolk.

His death was totally unexpected and followed a visit to the gym, indicating that he was feeling fine until his heart suddenly gave in. He was a loving family man and leaves his wife, Geraldine, and two children, now with their own families. He will be greatly missed by all of us.

Malcolm Ireland 1953 - 2023

There will be many from Salisbury house & the year groups above & below him that will be shocked & sadness by this news.

As Kevin says, “Malcolm was a “one off””..

Sad News

Unfortunately we have had two lots of sad news in the last week:

We have just received the sad news of the passing of Anne Hoare. Her husband, Adrian, has written the following:-

I am very sorry and sad to let you know that my wife Anne Hoare, former teacher and deputy housemistress, and joint president with me of the Old Wymondhamians, passed away at the Norfolk & Norwich Hospital on 23 December 2023.

Anne came with me to the college in 1974 when I took up an appointment as head of history. She served the college between the late 1970s and 1994, teaching French, English and History part time, and later was given responsibility for special educational needs. As well as being a teacher at the college, she also served as a matron in Peel and Cavell, later becoming Cavell’s deputy housemistress when I was housemaster.

Most importantly Anne researched the story of the American Hospital that existed on the site of Wymondham College during World War Two – a story about which little was known when we joined the school in 1974. She collected many photos of the hospital, and this led to our writing and publishing a book ‘Wartime on a Country Estate 1943-45’ in 2020. During her research Anne contacted a number of former hospital personnel and their families, some of whom became friends and made the journey from the United States to visit the site.

She also provided text and photographs for the information boards which form part of the history trail around the college site, and for the chapel heritage centre.

A funeral notice will be posted in the Eastern Daily Press in due course.

We have also learned of the passing of John Beales on 29th December 2023. This from his wife Gesa:

My husband, John Beales, died early this morning. [Fri 29th Dec 2023].

He was a pupil at Wymondham College from 1952 until 1959 and learned to enjoy rugby and cricket under Mike Rees's tutelage.

His success at A-levels enabled him to study geology at Nottingham University and to take up a post as biology teacher, later Head of Department at Wellingborough School.

In later years he enjoyed many WC reunions, including annual golf games.

& this tribute from Mike Herring:-

John was in my year and house (East) when we joined WC in 1952. He was a good athlete, rugby player and cricketer. He became a teacher and in 2003 he joined myself and a few of my family on an Aussie tour to the rugby World Cup. My grandson, who was 11 at the time, still remembers him fondly because of the time he spent with him investigating the flora and fauna of Australia. It was partly John's influence that made him choose a career in biology after Uni.

A really nice guy and someone it was a pleasure to spend time with. We will miss him.

John was also a former Old Wymondhamian Committee member [as well as serving as Chairman].

As Gesa says, he regularly attended the OW Golf Days and appended is a photo from the 2017 event:-

 Sad News

We have learned of the passing of Barrie Croxford  aged 82 years.  He died suddenly, on November 28th 2023, at his home in Outwell.     He was the dearly loved husband of Maysel and a much loved dad of David and Anna. A respected sportsman and a friend to many. Barrie was a good all round sportsman but particularly excelled at cricket. He was a fast bowler and later he became a very good golfer. He was a prolific winner of the OW Golf Days which he had supported over the past few years.

January Update

SAD NEWS

We have recently received this sad news from Dorothy Pymer [Miss Mann] "I have just heard from Graham Saville of the death of Malcolm Fairhurst from a heart attack in hospital at the end of 2022. His wife Ann [Miss Roscoe] is in a home suffering from dementia and Malcolm had found life without her very difficult." Malcolm was a Chemistry teacher and appears on the Gloucester House photo from 1969.

December Update

Sad News

Steve Read has let us know of the passing of two more alumni:

Ken North (1967 - 72 I think) - He was Durham/New Hall (a year below me) and pretty sure he went to County athletics meetings as a pole vaulter (there weren't many of those about!)

Dave Arnott (1970 - 75) - Also Durham/New Hall, died peacefully at home aged 63. Played with me at Dereham Rugby Club, a tenacious flanker as I recall and an all round popular guy.

 November Update

Sad News

We have been told that Christine Harding sadly passed away in March 2022. Christine was in Washington and Peel Hall 1969-1974

Pietro [Pedro] Stasi also passed away recently. We believe Pedro was at Wycol from 1965 to 1972 in Canterbury/Kett. A veritable "man mountain" when it came to rugby! You always wanted him on your side.

College Reunion for 1972 Leavers

The reunion organised by Geoff Lewis (1965-72) was a great success. A number of year groups were well represented. A tour of the Campus was followed by a barbeque provided by the College.

OW Golf Day 2022 - Bob Rowell has confirmed that next year's Golf Day will be on Friday 30th June

 June Update

Sad News

Phil Robinson has informed us of the passing of Bruce Horrex. Bruce was in Salisbury house and started in 1964, we think. He was a King’s Lynn lad and his father used to own the Majestic cinema and played the organ prior to film screenings. He had not been in good health for a number of years and he was in a care home for at least the last five. The following is from the local newspaper:

HORREX - Bruce. Passed away peacefully, on May 10, 2021, at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, aged 68, of King's Lynn. Much-loved dad of Laura. Dearly loved brother of Helen and uncle to Sam and Simon. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Funeral service at Mintlyn Crematorium, on Wednesday, June 2, at 10am. Donations, if desired, for RNLI.

May Update

Remembering His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh

With the sad passing of Prince Philip, we are reminded that he visited the college in March 1990. The report of the visit is here. Charles Hill - Science 1975-2005 - has been in touch to say that the 1990 College magazine is an also excellent tribute to HRH. Sadly we don't have a copy of this on the site.

Sad News

Joan Thomson [nee Woodbridge] has advised us of the sad news that John Chapman passed away on 6th April 2021. He had been suffering from Parkinsons for some years and four weeks ago had a fall, breaking his neck. He was doing well in hospital but died suddenly and unexpectedly. He lived in New Zealand for many years and he was at the College from 1955-1958.

“Wartime on a Country Estate – Some Americans in Norfolk 1943-1945”

If you have an interest in what the Wymondham College site was like immediately prior to the establishment of Wycol, Anne & Adrian Hoare [teachers between 1974 and 1994] have written and published the above A4 book. The book is about a Norfolk Country House Estate requisitioned for the war effort. On its land, an American Army Hospital was built to care for US Army Air Force casualties and later ground forces from the Normandy Campaign against the Nazis. It tells the stories of those who met there – airmen, doctors, nurses, Red Cross workers, drivers, military police, soldiers and musicians, sometimes in the own words and with their own photographs. The book is available from Anne and Adrian by contacting them at:- adrianhoare@btinternet.com The cost is only £7.00 which includes postage and packing to UK addresses.

CCF Volunteers needed for the College

The College are currently looking for volunteers to join the CCF staff and have asked us to see if any local Alumni are interested. Over lockdown, they have had several staff leave and retire and this has left the Army section with little to no staff. Please see here the email from the Acting Contingent Commander. If you are interested please contact the bursar and he will pass it on: bursar@wymondhamcollege.org

March Update

1951 Starters - 70th Anniversary

Maggy Skipp (Smith) has been in touch to put us straight about the 1951 Starters: "I have seen many guesses about how many pupils started in February 1951 so as it is our 70th anniversary I would like to set the record straight, there were 32 boys and 32 girls chosen. Two coaches picked us up on that first day, I was from King’s Lynn and first on our coach, we picked up one boy or one girl as we travelled through various villages on our way to Wymondham. On arrival our names were called and we were allocated a dormitory - 16 and 18 for the girls 26 and 28 for the boys – until it came to Rae Fuller who was given a boys number but turned out to be a girl which caused a bit of laughter – so there were 31 boys and 33 girls. I have the original photo of the first girls which is on the ‘51 page, all named and there are 33 of us". Sadly due to the current situation, any plans the College had to celebrate the 70th Anniversary will not now happen. It is hoped that the OWs may be able to put together an event in mid-October, but we will have to wait and see how things go.

We have received sad news of more alumni who have left us:

Andrew Bawden – 1967-74 Andrew passed away on 25th January aged 65.

Louis Gidney - Louis arrived at Wycol in September 1951 and left in the summer of 1958. He passed away peacefully in a care home in Fort William, having formerly lived in Strontian in the Scottish Highlands.

Stephen Wilson – 1969 – 1975

Kevin Dobson sadly passed away from cancer in July 2020, aged 61 - he was a student in New Hall from 1970-1978.

Elga Carol Brodie passed away in July 2019, aged 81 - we believe he was a student in the 1950s.

Roger Garrard

We received the very sad news that Roger Garrard has passed away. The following is the announcement that appeared in the Eastern Daily Press on 22nd December ...... GARRARD ROGER JOHN Died peacefully on Wednesday, December 16th, aged 92 years. Beloved and loving husband of Brenda, adored father of Jane and Guy and treasured grandfather of Sara. Private family funeral. A service of remembrance and celebration of Roger’s life will be announced post-covid. Donations, if desired, for Wymondham Methodist Church may be sent c/o Eirlys Johnson Funeral Services, 87 High Street, Watton, IP25 6AW.

In the Heritage Room we came across a folder of photographic slides showing all aspects of “Wycol Life” – classroom; sports; general views; 6th form socials. They were taken by a professional photographer, Graham Hiles, and were for a future prospectus. We think it was 1986 although are happy to be corrected. If you were a pupil in 1986 you might appear so have a look and if you can provide any names or dates we would love to hear from you. There are four separate pages and links can be found as follows: Hiles1, Hiles2, Hiles3, Hiles4

Richard Wilson - Salisbury 67-72 - Fundraising for Macmillan

50 years on from the moon landings – which I am sure some of you will remember as well as I do - I am having my head shaved for Macmillan Cancer support - not just a head shave though - being mildly daft, I have got the local Harvey Nichols store to support me by painting my balded head to look like the moon!

If anyone would like to support my fundraising efforts, especially as we are sadly losing more and more friends to that awful disease, that would be very kind. The fundraising link is below. Richard Wilson

Derek Robson

We have heard that Derek Robson has recently passed away. Derek was a member of the college teaching staff in the early 1960s and went on to become a long serving Headmaster of Culford School. We are unsure of the era that Derek was at the College but the 1962 magazine mentions that he had married Miss Moss and the 1972 magazine states that he had been appointed Headmaster at Culford.

A couple of obituaries can be found on these websites:-

http://www.culford.co.uk/Derek-Robson-1935---2019

https://www.theguardian.com/education/2019/apr/29/derek-robson-obituary

and Adrian Dubock and Alan McIvor Dean have sent in their memories which can be seen here.

Thanks to Kate Hallett [nee Bowden] for getting in touch to relay this sad news.

Sad News

We have heard the sad news that Mike Poulton passed away on 9th August. Peter Woodrow has sent in the following tribute:

"Mike came to Wymondham College in 1969 to replace Norman Croudace as Head of Mathematics, Norman having moved on to be County Mathematics adviser. He was Head of Mathematics from September 1969 until retirement in July 1996. He was also a 6th form tutor in Lincoln, a keen badminton player, a keen golfer and cricketer. He also organised Chess competitions at the College. Professionally he was also a senior examiner for A Level Statistics and International GCSE. He used to arrange his half day to coincide with the half day of lots of his colleagues - Andy Seeley, David Mills, Melvyn Taylor, Bob Mullenger et .al. so that they could spend Wednesday afternoons on a course - a golf course! He had four children who all passed through the college - Helen, Hazel, Jane and Richard. On retirement he and his wife Margaret travelled widely in England with their caravan and also travelled to the States, Canada and Australia - whenever we bumped into him and his late wife Margaret we always heard news of their latest trip and Margaret’s key phrase was ….’we are spending the kids inheritance’. They certainly enjoyed their retirement until Margaret’s passing in 2011. In retirement Mike was for a time treasurer for Wymondham Heritage Museum, a keen photographer and more recently had been involved with U3A. Mike coped well with his illness and responded well to experimental drug therapy until a few weeks ago when he knew that his days were limited."

He can be seen in a photo from Founders Day in 2007 in the accompaniment of Steve Read, Roger and Brenda Garrard. For some reason he was also known as Harry but we're not sure why!

February Update

Sad News

John Street

It is with much sadness that we announce the passing of John Street who taught mathematics at the College from1980. When he retired through ill health in 2012 the then Principal, Mr Melvyn Roffe, stated “A previous Principal of Wymondham College wrote of Mr Street that he was “a schoolmaster of sterling worth and great integrity”. In so writing my predecessor was guilty only of understatement. Mr Street has been a stalwart teacher, a good friend to many and a generous, kind and charming colleague.”

Former colleague, Mr Peter Woodrow, said “John was a lovely colleague and a person we are so pleased to have called a friend. So very sad that his life has been cut short, but generations of students and colleagues should be proud that he has been part of our lives”.

Some of you will also remember John as a student, he was a day pupil [CGS] in Yare. He also played an important part in the early days of setting up the Wymondham College Association, which is now the Old Wymondhamians.

Our thoughts are with his wife Sue and children Oli and Josh. Details of the funeral service are below.

Joan Sperring (Tebbutt)

Update: Having reported last month the passing of Joan, we have today been made aware of a Memorial Service being held at the church she attended. It will be at 2pm on Wednesday 28th February at Downham Market Methodist Church.

We sadly have to report the passing of Joan Sperring, otherwise known as Miss Tebbutt, the first Head of the Grammar School.  She arrived in September 1951 with the 'Thetford Transferees' and left in 1955 when the Grammar and Technical Schools were merged under Mr Metcalfe as Warden.  Joan celebrated her 100th birthday last November but sadly died on 17th January, following a fall and a brief spell in hospital.

Jack Smith writes: "Several former pupils visited her during her 100th year celebrations last summer and joined her for lunch.  She was full of conversation with her incredible memory for past events and of former pupils.  Joan was an amazing lady who touched the lives of so many of us.  She was held in high esteem by those she taught and influenced.  She will be remembered fondly and with much gratitude for her impact on so many young lives.

Her step son-in-law, Roger Sperring advises that her funeral will be held on Monday, 19th February at Luton Crematorium, Hitchin Road, Luton LU2 8DD at 12 noon.  We note that their web site names the crematorium as: The Vale Crematorium and adds:  Butterfield Green Road, which is off Hitchin Road."

If anyone has any memories of Miss Tebbutt that they would like to share, or would like to express their appreciation, please get in touch. We will put together any thoughts received and send them to her family.

More Sad News

Another passing we have learned about is Sheila Forde, nee Fenn, who sadly died last October.

She would have been a pupil from around 1951-1958.

Each year we are visited by 60-70 former students and staff. It is an opportunity to see the achievements of current students and also to hear the fantastic College Concert and Jazz Bands. Representatives from the OW's will be there so come along for a chat and if you are interested in helping for a couple of hours you would be most welcome.

OW Golf Day - Friday 1st July 2016 - Sprowston Manor

Each year Bob Rowell (52-59) organises a Golf Day and Dinner which is open to all Old Wymondhamians.

The event becomes more popular each year and always attracts a large contingent of golfers of varying standards. However, golf is not compulsory and many join later in the day for dinner and an evening of good company.

We have all enjoyed meeting old friends at this annual event and it would great to be joined by any new faces. Steve and Phil will also be carrying out the June OW STAR draw at this event.

Please contact Bob if you would like to attend for the golf, dinner or both - bob.e.rowell@outlook.com

Kett Hall 1974/2015

42 years ago (1974) Kett Hall Girl's House Captain was Jan Cummings and Boy's House Captain was William 'Trev' Trevethick. By coincidence they both moved to the same area of Warwickshire in 2007 and have met up occasionally. It was then discovered that Georgina "George' Norman, also from Kett, lived in the same town. Read Trev's article and see a couple of pictures here.

Sad News

Gill Thompson [Norman] has been in touch to let us know the sad news that Pennie Bradshaw, nee Start, passed away in a hospice in Elland, Yorkshire after battling with stomach cancer since late last year. She knew this was terminal, and that she was unlikely to survive until the summer, but held on until her grandchild was born in June. She sold her house in Bradford to rent a place in Hebden Bridge so she could be near her sister Carol, and leave her affairs in order for her son and daughter, Laurence and Alice. She died peacefully surrounded by her sister and daughter. RIP Pennie.

A question about a piece of art work

Kris Dwornik has been in touch with the following question: 'Does anyone remember the pen and ink poster in the art rooms of The Beatles 'Sgt. Peppers' album done by Alun Hood? It was poster size depicting Lucy's head with hair flowing over the whole sheet and in it were all the characters - newspaper taxis, plastercine porters, bridge by a fountain, marshmallow pies etc. pen and ink but ideal for colouring in in psychedelic colours.? I dearly loved that poster and wonder if anyone knows what happened to it? If so can I get a copy or better still the original? If anyone can help I'd be very grateful.' Please contact Kris if you can help.

Sad News

John Young has reported the passing of Tommy Young, 1953–1960, South House.

"Tom died on 24th March 2015 after a thankfully relatively short struggle with cancer. He had a successful time at Wymondham, particularly in sport. He appears in the 1st XV rugby photos for 1957/8, 1958/9, and 1959/60, and the 1st XI cricket photos for 1958, 1959, 1960. He was also a member of the school choir." - John Young (South/Gloucester 1960–1967).

John mentions that he started Wymondham as Tom left, and he was called Tom from then on. Some of his contemporaries only know one Tom Young, so he wanted to make sure they didn't get the wrong Tom Young.

Andrew Charles Hutcherson Street passed away on February 16th, 2015, aged 77 years. He was another of the original “Guinea Pig” 1951 Technical College Spring intake. (Apologies if you read this earlier in the month - I had missed off his surname.)

Roger Garrard

After a long association with the College first as a teacher in 1952 culminating in 18 years membership of the Old Wymondhamians Committee, ROGER GARRARD has decided it is time to step down. We thought it would be nice to invite Roger and Brenda to dinner at The Boars Pub Restaurant, Spooner Row on Wednesday 18th March 2015.

This will combine nicely with the monthly OW 100 CLUB DRAW when Phil and Steve and others will join Roger and Brenda for dinner prior to the draw. Other OWs are most welcome to attend and anyone wishing to join the diners should contact the pub on 01953 605851 and book your dinner - 6:30pm for 7pm quoting the OW group. The restaurant capacity is 30.

If you are not dining, then you might like to join the party for the draw and drinks later.

Sad News

Bryan Tungate passed away at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital on February 9th, 2015, aged 75. Bryan was one of the pioneer September 1951 Wymondham Technical College students who became a dedicated Norwich and King's Lynn Speedway Historian. It is no surprise he exercised his archival talents later in life as, not partaking in any sport himself, he showed tremendous support and enthusiasm for those who did and in some cases knew more about their achievements than they did themselves. In later recollections he was sometimes referred to as the sage of Wymondham College and was known to partake in contract line writing for those who chose not to do it themselves.

REUNIONS OF FORMER STUDENTS AND STAFF

The College is always pleased to provide facilities for a Reunion. Any year Groups who are looking to celebrate an anniversary should get in touch with Caroline, the Alumni Secretary, to discuss format, costs and help on the day. Experience tells us that an attendance of around 60 will ensure an enjoyable reunion at an affordable price. A BBQ format often seems popular and is cost effective. Please get in touch if you have an event you would like to discuss.

SAD NEWS

Mike Hammond has been in touch with sad news: "Sadly I have to advise that my sister Joy Elizabeth Hammond passed away suddenly on 9th April. She was only 65 and there were no previous signs that would have given any warning. Joy, like me was a past pupil and I believe from my memory was at the College from 1959-64. She has joined myself and Sandie at quite a number of the PSA dinner dances and also enjoyed the 60 year anniversary celebration. Having only recently retired, she was enjoying taking up golf and looking after her two grandchildren at times. She leaves her husband Graham and two daughters."

April Update

As you will have read last month Rachel Campbell Still was awarded the OW Travel Award and is planning to spend a year in Guyana with Project Trust where, amongst other things, she will be teaching Maths and Science. Once she is in Guyana we will keep you up to date with her progress on the Travel Award page.

ROYAL NORFOLK SHOW 2014

At the risk of repeating myself we would love to hear from anyone who would like to spend an hour or two 'manning' the stand we have at the RNS. No onerous duties, just talking to other OWs! We form part of the College stand and we always have plenty of OWs who come along to say hello. This year the Show will be held on Wednesday 25th and Thursday 26th June. If you are thinking of visiting the show and would like to help please email Julie and let her know which day would be most convenient for you.

It has also been proposed that the Wymondham College stand could be used as a reunion point on the Thursday lunchtime. If you are a fairly recent leaver then why not come along and see if you still recognise any of the staff, or indeed any other OWs who may like to come along.

SAD NEWS

We have heard that Robin Sewell died on or around 15th April 2014. We aren’t 100% sure when he started at WC but he left in 1970 when he was in the Upper Sixth. His sister, Melita, was also at WC and sadly she died in 1999.

Edith Cavell

Jo Mills (ex of Worcester House) has been in touch as there is currently a petition on change.org to have the face of Edith Cavell on a £2 coin. JFK Remembered

With the JFK 50th anniversary being in the news recently, Brian Ellis has sent in his memory of the day:

I remember coming out of prep at 7:30pm from Salisbury dining room to be greeted by matron, Miss (Dolly) Dolan. She wore a very solemn look on her face as she broke the news to us. I remember thinking that the tone of her voice and solemnity of her demeanour meant that I should be overcome with grief. I knew he was something to do with the Cuba crisis...whatever that was...but really wasn’t up to speed with world affairs sufficiently to grasp the enormity of the event. We stood silent for a while then had our supper. (Lights out was 8:30pm for us 1st years). I came to realize that JFK may not have been a saint but that the world had lost a great man. Citizens of the USA still grieve and ask questions. I’m sure that all those of a certain age will remember where they were when the news broke. I do! JFK still remembered with respect. Brian S. W. Ellis

Looking for Robert Cameron

We have been contacted by a Mr Gammel who would like to get hold of Robert Cameron who was Head Boy a number of years ago. Some time ago he bought a car from Robert and he has found an item which he believes may have some sentimental value to him and wants to return it. He believes Robert is now living in Sweden but wondered if we had any contact details. Although Robert is on the database his details are not up to date, so if you have any knowledge of his whereabouts please email Julie and we can put Mr Gammel and Robert in touch.

Justin Fashanu

Some of you may remember back in 2011 Nick Baker started to write his book: 'Forbidden Forward: The Justin Fashanu Story' and wanted to hear from anyone who remembered him. His mum, Betty Jackson, was a part-time music teacher at WC and he grew up in Shropham, Norfolk. Well the book is finally available to buy. It is available from Waterstones and WHSmith but if you order it directly from his website: www.justinfashanustory.com then it is two pounds cheaper plus he will throw in free packaging and shipping (definitely the best option!)

In the end, the book took him almost two years to complete and he managed to interview more than a hundred people who knew the footballer personally when he was alive.

If you know of anyone who might like to contribute, but doesn’t access this site, do please let them know. There is still time, and it would be helpful to receive contributions by the beginning of August. Thank you, Dorothy Pymer (Miss Mann, Wells House 1968-1972) email: dorothyremy@netscape.net

Royal Norfolk Show

Several members of the OW Committee attended the Royal Norfolk Show on 26th and 27th June as part of the College stand and over 70 past pupils and staff visited us and signed the visitors book, among them several people who weren't aware of us who were sent home with lots of information! The RNS is popular with OWs and it always good to catch up. Photos of the OW stand can be seen here as well as a photo sent in by Steve Read of a group who left in 1973.

John Farman

We have been advised of the sad death of John Farman on 30 April, aged 59. John was in Gloucester House 1965–1970, leaving at the end of his fifth year. Over the last few years the ‘class of 72’ have had several reunions and John has been included. He had suffered with increasingly ill health for 3 years. Although John was an Accountant, his first love was music. Even through his ill health John remained cheerful and positive and will be much missed by his peers. He leaves a widow – Gill – and 7 year old son Adam.

Sydney Reunion

Mike Herring has sent in photographs of the successful reunion in Australia in April and they can be seen here.

Lake Maggiore, Italy

Jane Everett who was a 6th Former in 1991/92 has opened a B&B on Lake Maggiore in Italy with her husband and they would like to offer all OW's a discount on the published prices if they decide to visit that part of Italy for their holidays. They are also able to offer short courses in sailing, horseriding, golf, cookery and even sommelier - all with English translation during their stay. Their website is work in progress but click here to see a pdf of their flyer for more information.

Newsletter

We are still looking for someone who would like to help put together the OW Newsletter. Please contact Julie if you are interested.

April 2013 Update

OW Travel Award

Six applicants were interviewed this year, all very enthusiastic and worthy winners, but we had to choose one winner and that was Bella Watson. Bella is going to Uganda for a year from August 2013 to teach English, Maths and Science to under-privileged children as well as encouraging Art, Drama and Music. Hopefully some of you have been reading the blog from last year's winner, Jordan. Bella has started her blog already and if you would like to learn more about what she will be doing and the fundraising towards it please click here.

March 2013 Update

Wells Girls - Miss Colls

At the end of August 2013 Miss Colls will be celebrating her 100th Birthday and I would like to put together a WC Birthday memento for her. It would be great to receive greetings from any Wells House girls or ex-members of staff. I suggest including full names and dates to help jog Miss Colls’ memory with your message. If you know of anyone who might like to contribute, but doesn’t access this site, do please let them know. There is lots of time, but it would be helpful to receive contributions by the beginning of August. Thank you, Dorothy Pymer (Miss Mann, Wells House 1968-1972) email: dorothyremy@netscape.net

February 2013 Update

The OW Reunion this year will be held on Saturday 22nd June at The Unthank Arms in Norwich. It is being organised by Karen Snook (77-82) and she would love to hear from you if you are keen to attend. All OWs are welcome and it would be great to see lots of you there. See the Future Reunions page for more details and a list of those who have already made contact.

The OW Golf Day and Dinner will be held at Sprowston Manor Golf Club on Friday 5th July. If anyone would like to attend, either to play golf or attend the dinner, or indeed both, please contact Bob Rowell. More information will be available on here nearer the date but now is the time to put it in your diaries and get your name down with Bob.

There will be no OW Spring Newsletter this year as we have no-one to produce it for us. However, the Principal has suggested that we have an A4 sized insert in the College Summer Newsletter, and two 6th formers who attend our Committee meetings have volunteered to help us put it together. It will be posted to all OWs who are on the database - join here if you are not already on.

Bearing in mind the above, is there anyone out there who has the software and who would be willing to help us put together our own Newsletter in future years? We can organise the printing but need someone to pull it all together for us. If you are interested please contact Julie.

The Royal Norfolk Show will take place on Wednesday 26th and Thursday 27th June. If anyone would like to come along and help us on either day please contact Julie.

The OW AGM and Committee Meetings were held at College on Saturday 2nd February. The minutes are available as pdf files. Click here to read.

January 2013 Update

Last year we presented the OW Travel Award to Jordan Cadman-Rivers towards his travelling expenses for his year working with Project Trust in South Africa. He is writing a monthly blog which is a very interesting read and can be found here.

Mike Herring is organising a reunion in Sydney Australia in April this year and has had a good response from those whose emails are on the database. If you are interested and haven't been contacted please see Mike's note and get in touch with him.

Dave Turner (51-58) has kindly donated various items for display in our Heritage Room. We are continuing our work on the Room and if you have anything you would like to donate please get in touch (see Phil's note in the box above and the Heritage Room page).

We would still love to hear your comments on how the College is represented at the Royal Norfolk Show and any ideas that you might have to improve on what we already do. There are lots of you out there who make a point of visiting the stand and it would be great to hear what you think. Please get in touch.

The College is celebrating an outstanding Ofsted inspection. Read more here.

December 2012 Update

A meeting was held at the College to discuss how WC is represented at the Royal Norfolk Show. If anyone has any ideas as to how the OWs could improve on what they do at the Show we would love to hear from you.

Please get in touch here.

The Sixties Bunch Christmas get-together was held in Norwich on Sunday 9th December and a report and photos has been sent in by Philip Wade and can be seen here.

In October we reported the passing of Graham Smith, an OW and Sixties Bunch regular and Philip Wade has written an obituary which can be read here.

On 22nd November I attended an East Region meeting of AROPS (Association of Representatives of Old Pupil Societies) at The Leys School in Cambridge. It is a useful forum to exchange ideas on friend-raising and fund-raising and to learn how others run their Associations. If you would like to find out more please visit their website - www.arops.org.uk

Whilst working on the OW Heritage Room, we have discovered that there are several years for which we have no College Magazine. If you have a copy from one of the following years which you would be prepared to donate to us please get in touch - 1954, 1956, 1958, 1959, 1965, 1967, 1968, 1969, 1970.

John Haden, a former Principal, has written an excellent book about his work with schools in Uganda, called Oh Uganda, May God Uphold Thee. The official book launch was held at the College and details of how to buy a copy can be found in the report on the College Website.

November 2012 Update

On Saturday 10th November we held one of our regular OW committee meetings at the College. We were joined by two current 6th formers and it was useful to have their input. Fund-raising and Reunions seemed to be the main topics of discussion. If anyone would like to get in touch with their ideas on either of these subjects we would love to hear from you. Please email me at julie@wcremembered.co.uk. The minutes are available here.

On Sunday 11th November the College Remembrance Day Service was held in the Chapel. Following the service a wreath was laid in the Memorial Garden on behalf of the OWs, along with the Principal and Mr David Hastings representing the College Governors. We were also joined by a representative from the US Air Force based at Mildenhall.

October 2012 Update

Sad News

We have to report the passing of the following OWs:

If anyone would like to write a few words for the In Memorium page, please get in touch.

September 2012 Update

Calling all Canadians

We would like to make contact with any OWs living in Canada. We are hoping to hold a reunion in the Calgary area and would like to know how many of you are out there and would be interested. Please email Julie if you would like to join us.

Wymondham College Alumni Database

It has come to our attention that some OWs are experiencing problems when searching by name for individuals. Having looking into this it would appear that you need to enter JUST the SURNAME into the name box, it will then give you a list of possible names and you need to click on the one you are looking for. Also, when searching the database it is advisable to press the reset button to clear all search boxes between each search or it may not work. For more information or to report any issues, please email Caroline Hall, or write to her at Wymondham College, Wymondham, Norfolk NR18 9SZ.

If you are not registered on the database, why not do it now? You can search for others and they can search for you! Click here for easy access.
